Therapeutic Design for Human Health
Overview
We aim to apply the principles of therapeutic design to the built environment. For our final project, we conceptualized and designed a space that accommodates everyone, particularly benefiting marginalized populations. Our team created an inclusive sandbox playground, Sand Dojo that caters to a diverse group of individuals. Our design features a balance of prospect and refuge, providing areas where people can seek quiet retreats while also offering sensory enrichment through elements like a half-log, wind chimes, and a swing. Through this project, I gained a broader perspective on how the built environment can effectively meet the diverse needs of individuals.
Task Accomplished
-Demonstrate a working understanding of the role of the sensory systems in therapeutic design
-Understand how an interdisciplinary approach to all design work can maximize project outcomes
-Recognize how eugenics is based on the relationship between social and economic disparities, trauma, nature and health, and sensory design
-Apply design decisions that consider JEDI+ A for all projects
-Understand the underpinnings of universal and inclusive design and its role in all design projects
Leadership Competencies Gained
Teamwork
I learned that we can use people's strength to get our task done in a timely manner. We had someone that was good at drawing. While another group member was good at writing to connect out ideas and get them on paper. We were able to use our strengths and learn from each other! We can lean on each-other for support when we are sick or emotionally stressed.
Feedback
Each week we meet together to exchange ideas. My role was mostly the organization aspect where I created the docs , folder, and submitted assignments like a secretary. We gain feedback from other peers in the class and our instructor. In return, I gave feedback to my group members and other groups too!
Lesson Learned
Through my experiences, I came to understand the significant presence of biases inherent in the build process, particularly in ensuring that our projects cater to a diverse audience. This realization emphasized the importance of inclusivity and accessibility in our designs. I learned that the more we tailor our builds to serve the specific needs of the community, the more impactful and beneficial they become to the space and its users. This underscores the vital role of considering a wide range of perspectives and demographics during the planning and execution phases to create spaces that truly enhance the lives of all who interact with them.
For example, considerations for the visually impaired, neurodivergent individuals, and those with sensory sensitivities underscore the necessity for creating spaces that are welcoming and accommodating for all, including aging audiences.
Our learning objectives focus on understanding the full spectrum of human experiences and recognizing how the built environment influences interactions and usage.
