Introduction To Public Speaking

Overview

I had honed my ability to compose and deliver clear and compelling speeches. To achieve this, we studied the principles of prosody, narrative structure, and argumentation. Prosody taught me how to use intonation, stress, and pacing effectively. Narrative structure helped me create coherent and engaging speeches, while argumentation improved my ability to construct logical and persuasive arguments.

We also critically analyzed our own speeches and those of others, learning from both successes and mistakes. This process deepened my understanding of effective communication techniques.

Consistent practice and feedback from peers and mentors were crucial. Regular practice sessions allowed me to refine my style and build confidence, ultimately enhancing my ability to deliver impactful presentations.

Task Accomplished

-Be socially responsible, literate citizens who can interpret and evaluate the images and messages they create and receive.
-Design and deliver basic, ceremonial, complex arguments clearly
-Speak confidently with appropriate rate, projection, movement, and vocal variety.

Leadership Competencies Gained

Writing
For my speech paper, summarize the topic and provide an annotated bibliography demonstrating that there are enough sources to support your claims. Your instructor will read these and provide recommendations on which topic might serve as the best one for this class.

Self-Assessment
Perform a self-evaluation, identifying your strengths, areas for improvement, and your greatest growth over the past 10 weeks. Your self-critique will be assessed based on your ability to provide clear, insightful, and accurate analysis.

Confidence
Rehearsing the speech repeatedly enhances confidence in delivering it effectively. I began by practicing the speech on my own, and then I took the opportunity to present it during my TA's office hours. This step-by-step approach helped me gain the confidence to speak in front of a group with assurance and clarity.

Lesson Learned

I discovered a valuable memorization technique that involves incremental learning. Instead of attempting to memorize an entire piece all at once, this method encourages starting with one line, then gradually adding one more line with each repetition. By continuously revisiting the beginning and adding lines incrementally, the material becomes easier to remember and recite fluently.

In this practice, repetition truly reinforces learning. As I dedicated more time to rehearsing my speeches using this technique, I noticed a significant improvement in both my delivery and confidence.

Throughout the quarter, we crafted speeches in four distinct styles: introductory, key point, ceremonial, and persuasive.
